Brownies and Guides have been earning new badges during action packed evenings at the Mary Rose Museum in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

Brownie packs have had the opportunity to work for their Disability Awareness Badge at an exclusive twilight evening. Activities include ‘Mobility Awareness’ – the chance to find out what it is like to visit a museum in a wheelchair, ‘Deaf Awareness’ – using hand-held signing guides and learning a few signs in a fun game with museum artefacts, and ‘Sight Awareness’ – using special glasses to find out what it is like to have a problem with sight and how the museum helps blind people, feeling Braille, raised pictures and artefacts.

Guides have enjoyed fun filled evenings which go towards their Blast from the Past Go For It award. These history activity sessions include dancing the night away with Tudor moves, playing games galore such as Nine Men’s Morris and Quoits, loading and firing a cannon and dressing in Tudor costumes.

Claire Rees, Division Commissioner, Girlguiding Portsmouth said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for girls to combine discovering their local heritage with achievements in Guides. The Mary Rose brings ‘Blast from the Past’ to life in a very real way.” Girls from 1st Drayton Guides (pictured) gained their ‘Blast from the Past Go For It’. They also used the experience to obtain their ‘Night at the Museum’ badge. One Guide said “I enjoyed the firing of the cannon because we did it as a team and it was fun.”

With exclusive use of the Mary Rose Museum, all activities are led by the museum team for groups of between 20 and 35 girls. 350 girls from 18 units across the East Hampshire Girlguiding area have taken part so far.

The Mary Rose is also developing activities for Cubs and Scouts in local history and navigation.
